Summer Summary

3rd July 2024

Good news; all the main parties have pledged to end evictions under section 21— oui oui, une impression de déjà vu. We still need stronger assurances around any new grounds for eviction, though. But security of tenure (or lack thereof) is not the only question to be answered; we need more.  And there is some more.

Healthy Homes campaign uses a simple scoring system to look at what each party is saying about housing and health
SHAC focuses on the actions parties promise to take or lobby for, if elected, in their analysis of four parties’ housing pledges

With so much deep knowledge, freely shared, from which any political party could have drawn inspiration, their manifesto commitments all look timid compared with the scale of the emergency. Very much more ambitious, exciting and equitable, here are some experts’ ideas to secure decent, affordable homes for us all.

The Confederation of Co-operative Housing Manifesto for Change sets out recommendations to enable communities to shape their own housing futures.
Architects’ Action for Affordable Housing have come together to demand that the next government do better. Architects think longer-term than any politician; their priorities provide 20 policies for a 20 year housing plan.

As one of the main Parties will win power at the polls on 4th July, please play your part in deciding who will form the next government and who else will be there to lobby. Take nothing for granted; please cast your vote.

 A Hundred Houses

Clemmy McWilliams-LeBusque used to rent a room in a large HMO on the main road at the borders of Shepherd’s Bush and East Acton. She designed the layout of the 2019 National Renters Manifesto for us. Now, Clemmy lives in Los Angeles, where she built her beautiful 100 Houses project, soon to be a book.

If paying the rent means that there’s no chance you’ll be going away this Summer, you are not alone—same here. But we can still visit California, virtually, anyway. People, podcasts and one hundred pastel-coloured houses: ahundredhouses.com
